Trip duration: 2-4 days

Distance from Adelaide: 166km (2hr)

Best times to visit: April, May, September & October

Episode to Watch: S1 E2 "Burra"

Burra is such an awesome town, and being just a 2hr drive from Adelaide, a perfect place to visit for the weekend! Burra used to be mining community (in fact, one of the largest in Australia!), so there's countless historic buildings to check out.

A must-do in Burra is the Heritage Passport Tour. Head to the Burra Visitor Information Centre and grab your very own heritage key, which allows you access into many locked and preserved historic sites from the mid-1800's. Sites like the awesome Redruth Gaol, Bon Accord Mine & Museum, Burra Mine Pumping Station, the historic Burra mining cottages and many more historic sites. You can travel at your own pace and hold onto the key for the duration of your stay, so take your time to check out every building or point-of-interest you visit!

If you're camping, I totally recommend staying at World's End Campground, a FREE campsite about 20km east of Burra. Situated right on the edge of the ranges and right on the Burra Creek, there is so much to explore at this place! There's beautiful creek lines, waterholes, mountains to conquer and scrub to explore! Kangaroos, emus, towering gumtrees and an array of birdlife make up just some of the spectacular fauna and flora that's present at the reserve. You could spend hours just wandering around exploring World's End!

Also around the Burra surrounds are many conservation parks; such as Red Banks and Caroona Creek. Red Banks Conservation Park contains some spectacular red sand cliffs that have naturally formed from erosion. Worth checking out - especially at sunset! Caroona Creek is another beautiful reserve, with running creeks, high gumtrees and plenty of wildlife! Fossils the large, wombat-like creature Diprotodon were found in this area also.

There is so much to explore in Burra and it's surrounds, so why not head up for a weekend, camp out with your family, set up a campfire and explore the historic town of Burra!
