Trip duration: 3-5 days
Distance from Adelaide: 275km (3hr 15min)
Best time to visit: April & October school holidays
Episode to Watch: S1 E1 Southern Flinders Ranges
The Southern Flinders Ranges are truly spectacular! Just a 3 hour drive from Adelaide and you're in Melrose; the oldest town in the Flinders located right in the heart of the Southern Flinders. Look up and you'll see the truly remarkable Mount Remarkable, towering nearly 1,000m above sea level!
Through the town, you'll see the countless historic buildings: including pubs, houses, town hall, post office and brewery! Head straight into the neighbouring Mount Remarkable National Park and be engulfed in thick green shrub and towering gumtrees. Keep an eye out for the local wildlife - there's plenty of kangaroos, emus and birdlife around! If you're up to it, why not take the 6hr hike up to the summit of Mount Remarkable? It's well worth it!
Mountain bike riding is a very popular recreational activity in the Southern Flinders and Melrose in particular. Be sure to head to Over the Edge Bike Hire in Melrose and hire yourself a mountain bike to explore the countless trails around the town and the ranges.
Hop into the car and take the short drive from Melrose to the town of Wilmington, home of Alligator Gorge (as featured in my "Mambray Creek" trip) - a a truly magnificent natural landmark! From Wilmington, you can access Hancock's Lookout, where you'll find an amazing view looking out over Spencer's Gulf.
Be sure to head out to Quorn - home of the Pichi Richi Railway! This historical railway line has now been set up to take thousands of people every year through some beautiful scenery on historic coal train!
There's many places to stay in the area, but I recommended staying at the Melrose Caravan Park. It's a very nice place to camp located right in the heart of the Southern Flinders Ranges. There is much to explore around the area, so I suggest staying 3-5 days. The best time to visit is in autumn and spring, where the weather is just perfect! The Southern Flinders is a truly spectacular place!
