The RV carpark on Murray Street South is here to stay, with the addition to allow overnight parking for self-contained travellers.
Located across the road from the fire station, next to the SA Water depot, the Murray Street South Carpark has recently been tested as an all-day parking area for caravans, campervans, and other recreational vehicles.
After a successful 2-year trial, Council this week has resolved to allow the parking area to remain for recreational vehicles for the foreseeable future, while also extending the maximum parking limit to 48 hours.
When nominating in the 2022 elections, one of the biggest things I wanted to get done was to have a dedicated parking space for RVs, and the support from the community of this proposal was extremely positive.
Many travellers, particularly caravaners and campers on longer road trips, seek out easy to access towns, services and places to park, when looking for locations and points of interests to stop at. The Murray Street South Carpark allows those on these road trips that space.
This parking space, while not perfect, is in close proximity to Murray Street, allows more vehicles to park, contains easy entry and exit access and is more encouraging for travellers to stop, park, and stay in – while of course, contributing to our local economy.
Options for further exploration of the parking area, as well as a wholistic approach to tourism within Gawler, will be investigated in the Town Centre Design Framework review taking place this financial year.
