Ensuring everyone feels safe and is included in our community is the most important responsibility of council.
When I ask people why they love living in Gawler, the answer is almost always the same – the community. Unfortunately, there are many members of our community who don’t feel the support, safety, and inclusivity that many of us love about Gawler.
At last night’s council meeting, we accepted an invitation to join the Rainbow Council Network, organised by the SA Rainbow Advocacy Alliance (SARAA), the charitable peak body for LGBTQIA+ South Australians.
The Network allows councils from across the state to collaborate with SARRA, to learn and implement strategies to improve the wellbeing and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people in our community and share experiences of what they are doing within their respective communities to contribute to this goal.
We’ve got a lot of work to do in this space.
Joining this network is the first small step in converting policy into action; learning and understanding what more can be done, from the people it affects the most, and making the changes we need to make.
A huge thank you to Cr Issac Solomon, who has worked to bring these challenges and opportunities to council, and for his raw and emotive speech at last night’s meeting.
Let’s work together to ensure Gawler continues being a community where everyone feels safe and belongs.
